Guideline & Policy Statement
The Yale University Department of Campus Recreation encourages and embraces the diverse recreation, leisure, and wellness needs of our community. Our support of and ability to permit activities and behaviors may be limited and impacted by the following:
- The health and safety of both the individual(s) and/or others.
- The impact on others and their ability to enjoy, utilize or access our facilities, programs, and services.
- The impact or damage to our facilities and/or equipment.
The Department of Campus Recreation reserves to make final judgments for any activities, issues, or behaviors not directly addressed in the guidelines and policies below. Members can e-mail gradproims@yale.edu for additional information or clarification as to if their activity is permitted in the PWG.
The Department of Campus Recreation reserves the right to update, alter, or add guidelines and policies at any time. It is the responsibility of our members, guests, and participants to comply with the information listed below.
Sportsmanship, Misconduct & Possible Ejection
Intramural sports emphasize sportsmanship and place responsibility for fair play on all participants. Competitive play is encouraged; however, it must never come at the expense of mutual respect among competitors or the spirit of intramural camaraderie.
The designated team captain serves as the team representative and is responsible for the behavior and sportsmanship of their players and spectators. Inappropriate language or behavior will not be tolerated. If unsportsmanlike conduct continues after a warning, the team(s) may be required to leave the playing area and will be issued a forfeit.
Continued or severe unsportsmanlike conduct by individuals or teams may result in expulsion from the league.
Behavior deemed inappropriate by a referee or supervisor may result in a warning and/or immediate ejection.
Examples of such behavior include, but are not limited to:
- Persistent infringement of the rules
- Unsportsmanlike conduct
- Foul or abusive language directed toward players, supervisors, or referees
- Violent or dangerous actions
- Serious foul play
Any player who is ejected may be indefinitely suspended from all intramural sports pending a meeting with the Grad/Pro Intramural Coordinator and the Associate Athletic Director.
Contest Start Times & Forfeits
Teams are required to arrive and be prepared to compete at the officially scheduled contest start time.
A grace period of ten (10) minutes will be permitted following the scheduled start time. Failure of a team to begin play within this grace period will result in a forfeit.
Contest Cancellations & Reschedules
Cancellations by Campus Recreation or Facility Operations
If a contest is cancelled by Yale Campus Recreation or University Facility Operations due to weather or facility availability, team captains will be notified via email. If scheduling permits, contests will be rescheduled. Cancelled contests will not be recorded as a win or loss. If rescheduling is not possible, the contest will be nullified.
Cancellation or Rescheduling by a Team
The captain requesting a reschedule must contact the opposing team’s captain and the Intramural Coordinator by Friday at 3:00 p.m. prior to the contest weekend.
If the opposing captain agrees to reschedule, the captains and coordinator will work together to identify a mutually agreeable date and time.
If scheduling constraints prevent a new date from being identified, the team requesting the reschedule will be issued a forfeit. The opposing team will receive a win by default and be awarded default win points, which will count toward the final standings.
If both teams request a reschedule, they may work with the coordinator to identify a new date and time. If no agreement can be reached, the contest will be recorded as a double forfeit and no points will be awarded to either team.
Note: In extenuating circumstances, default points may be adjusted or a contest nullified at the discretion of the coordinator. All contests must be rescheduled no later than one (1) week prior to the start of playoffs.
Officiating
Self-Officiated Sports
Most contests are not officiated by a designated referee. All participants are expected to conduct themselves with respect and demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times.
All fouls and penalties must be self-called by participants actively involved in play and acknowledged by both teams. If a dispute cannot be mutually resolved, the play in question will be replayed.
Officiated Sports
5v5 Basketball contests will be officiated when staff is available. When referees are present, they are responsible for making all calls related to fouls and penalties. Disputes with referees and/or poor sportsmanship may result in a poor sportsmanship rating, ejection from the contest, or suspension from future participation.
If referees are unavailable, the self-officiated guidelines will apply.
Reporting Scores
Team captains or designated representatives are responsible for reporting contest scores using the designated reporting link at the conclusion of each contest. Scores only need to be submitted once; however, both teams must agree to and sign off on the final score.
Protests
Protests involving player eligibility may be submitted by any team captain and must be made during or immediately following the contest. All eligibility protests will be reviewed by the Intramural Coordinator or on-site supervisor.
Upon request, the team captain must present the player’s valid Yale ID to the on-site supervisor, referee, or coordinator. If no ID is available, the captain must submit a brief written statement including the individual’s name and the circumstances of the eligibility concern. If a player is found to be ineligible, all contests in which that player participated will be recorded as losses.
All other protests involving rule interpretation must be made at the time of the incident. Play may be stopped and will not resume until the protest is resolved by the captains using the governing rules or, if necessary, by a final decision from the on-site supervisor. Any team that refuses to continue play following a ruling will forfeit the contest.
