Graduate & Professional Intramurals

Intramurals: Graduate & Professional

The Graduate & Professional Intramural (Grad/Pro IM) Program provides an opportunity for Yale Graduate Students, Yale Faculty/Staff, and their Spouses to engage in recreational sports.

Grad/Pro IMs offers volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, and ultimate sport leagues throughout the year.

The season format usually consists of round-robin play followed by playoffs. All games are played on Sundays during the academic year and on weekday evenings during the summer. The length of the schedules and quantity of games reflects the number of registered teams and the availability of facilities.

Grad/Pro IMs are open to the following participants:

  • Current Yale Graduate Students
  • Current Yale Faculty/Staff and Yale New Haven Hospital Employees Faculty/Staff who have a current PWG Membership
  • Spouses who are 18 years of age above and have a current PWG Household Membership

Typically, teams are formed by program or graduate school, however any eligible participant can start their own team. To register a team, a participant will need to identify themselves as a team captain and register their team via the Fusion Play Mobile App.

Free agency is the process connecting individual participants who do not have a team to teams who are in search of additional participants. Yale Campus Recreation does not guarantee free agents will receive invites to join a team roster. Participants interested in becoming a Free Agent can register via the Fusion Play Mobile App.

Competitive Leagues are designed for teams who want to play a fast-paced game with a high degree of skill. While still encompassing the intramural spirit, teams in the competitive level consist of experienced players looking to continue to play at a high-performance level.

Recreational Leagues are designed for teams of enthusiastic players with no gender requirements. Within the recreational league the level of skill may vary, but participants will be able to enjoy playing in a fun, social atmosphere.

All leagues are considered Open-Gender. There are no gender requirements for teams, nor is anyone required to self-identity as a specific gender to play.

As a team captain it will be your responsibility to create and register your team. You will also serve as the point of contact to keep your team informed of schedules, guidelines, policies, and sport specific rules.

Captains are expected to create and support an inclusive environment as well as promote positive behavior and sportsmanship amongst their teammates.

  • Complete team registration through the Fusion Play App.
  • Attend the scheduled captains meeting. If the captain cannot attend, a representative must be sent to the meeting instead.
  • Distribute important information and schedules to teammates.
  • Organize team equipment and supplies.
  • The grad-pro IM program does not supply any playing equipment.
  • Communicate with the coordinator and other captains of any scheduling requests in a timely manner.
  • Accountable for team’s sportsmanship
    • Captains should set an example for teammates by playing within the guidelines and exhibiting a high level of sportsmanship.
    • Captains should address player conduct situations involving their team before the on-site supervisor must intervene.
  • Be knowledgeable of all game and eligibility rules.
  • Ensure that all teammates meet the eligibility requirements.
  • Inform teammates of any scheduling changes and updates.

Guideline & Policy Statement

The Yale University Department of Campus Recreation encourages and embraces the diverse recreation, leisure, and wellness needs of our community.  Our support of and ability to permit activities and behaviors may be limited and impacted by the following:

  • The health and safety of both the individual(s) and/or others.
  • The impact on others and their ability to enjoy, utilize or access our facilities, programs, and services.
  • The impact or damage to our facilities and/or equipment.

The Department of Campus Recreation reserves to make final judgments for any activities, issues, or behaviors not directly addressed in the guidelines and policies below.  Members can e-mail gradproims@yale.edu for additional information or clarification as to if their activity is permitted in the PWG.

The Department of Campus Recreation reserves the right to update, alter, or add guidelines and policies at any time. It is the responsibility of our members, guests, and participants to comply with the information listed below.

Sportsmanship, Misconduct & Possible Ejection

Intramural sports emphasize sportsmanship and place responsibility for fair play on all participants. Competitive play is encouraged; however, it must never come at the expense of mutual respect among competitors or the spirit of intramural camaraderie.

The designated team captain serves as the team representative and is responsible for the behavior and sportsmanship of their players and spectators. Inappropriate language or behavior will not be tolerated. If unsportsmanlike conduct continues after a warning, the team(s) may be required to leave the playing area and will be issued a forfeit.

Continued or severe unsportsmanlike conduct by individuals or teams may result in expulsion from the league.

Behavior deemed inappropriate by a referee or supervisor may result in a warning and/or immediate ejection.

Examples of such behavior include, but are not limited to:

  • Persistent infringement of the rules
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct
  • Foul or abusive language directed toward players, supervisors, or referees
  • Violent or dangerous actions
  • Serious foul play

Any player who is ejected may be indefinitely suspended from all intramural sports pending a meeting with the Grad/Pro Intramural Coordinator and the Associate Athletic Director.

Contest Start Times & Forfeits

Teams are required to arrive and be prepared to compete at the officially scheduled contest start time.

A grace period of ten (10) minutes will be permitted following the scheduled start time. Failure of a team to begin play within this grace period will result in a forfeit.

Contest Cancellations & Reschedules

Cancellations by Campus Recreation or Facility Operations

If a contest is cancelled by Yale Campus Recreation or University Facility Operations due to weather or facility availability, team captains will be notified via email. If scheduling permits, contests will be rescheduled. Cancelled contests will not be recorded as a win or loss. If rescheduling is not possible, the contest will be nullified.

Cancellation or Rescheduling by a Team

The captain requesting a reschedule must contact the opposing team’s captain and the Intramural Coordinator by Friday at 3:00 p.m. prior to the contest weekend.

If the opposing captain agrees to reschedule, the captains and coordinator will work together to identify a mutually agreeable date and time.

If scheduling constraints prevent a new date from being identified, the team requesting the reschedule will be issued a forfeit. The opposing team will receive a win by default and be awarded default win points, which will count toward the final standings.

If both teams request a reschedule, they may work with the coordinator to identify a new date and time. If no agreement can be reached, the contest will be recorded as a double forfeit and no points will be awarded to either team.

Note: In extenuating circumstances, default points may be adjusted or a contest nullified at the discretion of the coordinator. All contests must be rescheduled no later than one (1) week prior to the start of playoffs.

Officiating

Self-Officiated Sports

Most contests are not officiated by a designated referee. All participants are expected to conduct themselves with respect and demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times.

All fouls and penalties must be self-called by participants actively involved in play and acknowledged by both teams. If a dispute cannot be mutually resolved, the play in question will be replayed.

Officiated Sports

5v5 Basketball contests will be officiated when staff is available. When referees are present, they are responsible for making all calls related to fouls and penalties. Disputes with referees and/or poor sportsmanship may result in a poor sportsmanship rating, ejection from the contest, or suspension from future participation.

If referees are unavailable, the self-officiated guidelines will apply.

Reporting Scores

Team captains or designated representatives are responsible for reporting contest scores using the designated reporting link at the conclusion of each contest. Scores only need to be submitted once; however, both teams must agree to and sign off on the final score.

Protests

Protests involving player eligibility may be submitted by any team captain and must be made during or immediately following the contest. All eligibility protests will be reviewed by the Intramural Coordinator or on-site supervisor.

Upon request, the team captain must present the player’s valid Yale ID to the on-site supervisor, referee, or coordinator. If no ID is available, the captain must submit a brief written statement including the individual’s name and the circumstances of the eligibility concern. If a player is found to be ineligible, all contests in which that player participated will be recorded as losses.

All other protests involving rule interpretation must be made at the time of the incident. Play may be stopped and will not resume until the protest is resolved by the captains using the governing rules or, if necessary, by a final decision from the on-site supervisor. Any team that refuses to continue play following a ruling will forfeit the contest.
